We were looking for a big non-typical Mule Deer that we knew was in the area. When the sun came up enough for us to see into the draw that the deer had been bedding in heavily, we saw this bear (which we assumed to be a normal black bear) in the shadows, and then a larger bear working his way down above the first. We decided to abandon the deer idea and pursue the larger bear. When we had worked our way into about 250 yds, the sun hit this bear squarely and we could tell right away that he was a Cinnamon. After a short decision, We worked down on him, My friend Mike stayed high in case we spooked him up. Dave and I worked down until we thought we were even with him, and worked across, coming out about 25 yds above where we should have, on our second try we came into the draw about 75 yds from where he had been. We waited for about 5 minutes, then we heard him tearing a stump apart across from where we had come out the first time. I left my pack with Dave and worked up and over into the draw. After stalking him for about 20 minutes, he came around a thicket, giving me a chance I wasn't ready for at about 25 yds. He kept working towards me behind a large Juniper and when I slid back on my belly to prepare for an uphill shot, he gave a curious glance over the edge of the bush. After eating for another few minutes, he headed back to the thicket. I took him at about 80 feet, he took two lunges, and tumbled about 20 feet into the thicket. He let out one echoing roar, and died right away. It was a perfect hunt, with good friends. The meat is excellent, and the hide is a trophy.
